Will You Regret Choosing Creative Freedom Over MONEY?
A Personal Reflection on Contentment, Gratitude, and the Power of “Enough”
Welcome to the fifth and final story of Chapter 2.
In Story 4, we talked about aging with imagination. But there is one question that haunts almost every creative who leaves the corporate world:
Should you choose creative freedom over financial security?
I’ve wrestled with this dilemma throughout my career, and I’m betting you have too. The pull of a stable income is powerful. But so is the magnetic force of pursuing your passions with complete autonomy—the freedom to create what you want, when you want, how you want.
We’re bombarded with success stories of people who leaped, faced uncertainty, and emerged with zero regrets. But here’s the truth: this choice isn’t black and white, and it’s definitely not right for everyone.
The Online Guru Trap: A Reality Check
In today’s world of side hustles and remote work, maybe we don’t have to choose one path entirely. Perhaps there’s a middle ground.
But let’s be honest about the industry selling the dream. The online gurus and life coaches say you can have both money and creative freedom—and they’ll teach you how, for a fee. But here’s the truth they won’t tell you: pursuing personal fulfillment and creativity doesn’t always generate income.
Don’t fall for AI-generated titles that manipulate you into believing it’s your fault for falling short because you’re not working hard enough or smart enough.
My Subscription Inbox Reminded Me of My “Shortcomings”
I’m a devoted reader of Medium and Substack. Two of my favourite writers are Tim Denning and Ayodeji Awosika. Reading their work is genuinely inspiring. But their message often flows to the familiar mantra: “If the coach can do it, you can too.”
Translation: Your life is broken, and they have the simplest answer—for a fee.
One day, my inbox delivered Tim Denning’s hook headline: “How to Get Ahead of 99% of People in 12 Months.” Twenty-four hours later, Ayodeji’s article arrived with a nearly identical title: “How to Get Ahead of 99 Percent of People (In 6 to 12 Months).”
They must use the same AI to generate catchy SEO titles. Powerful AI-refined titles like these aim to convince you that something is missing in your life.
The Psychology Behind the Self-Help Industry
To be clear, I genuinely enjoy reading them. Their writing styles are brilliant. But selling hope is big business. The not-so-subtle message is: “You’re not living your life to the best of your abilities. You can and must do better if you want to be happy.”
I’ve consumed hundreds of gallons of well-crafted “get-your-shit-together” advice. Halfway through most programs, I quickly get the point, lose interest, or realize I could have figured it out without paying a dime.
Confessions of a Creative Lollygagger
I prefer a more relaxed approach to life and creativity.
I Am Content With My Life and Grateful for My Achievements I value inner peace and personal growth more than making extra money. And that’s my choice. Don’t get me wrong—there are bills to pay. I live in Toronto, one of the most expensive cities in Canada. Sometimes I struggle as much as the next person.
However, I’ve figured out what I need to live a comfortable yet modest lifestyle within my means. Anything extra is a luxury that I hesitate to consume at the expense of my creative freedom.
I’ve been told I have the potential to make much more money than I currently do. A friend once said, “You’re wasting your God-given talent being creative simply for fun.”
These days, I’m lucky if I make .04 cents a month publishing on Medium. Who knew? But in fairness to the established pros, I’m unwilling to put in their level of effort to become a best-selling author.
I’m a big lollygagger—someone who farts around and wastes productivity time pursuing peace, love, and joy. I’ve mastered afternoon naps and relaxing while everyone else is on the hamster wheel. There, I finally said it publicly. Whew, it feels good to get it off my chest.
Hi, my name is Daniel, and I’m a lollygagger.
Mid-day naps and power cuddling with my love are the best. I can’t fathom spending more hours than minimally necessary with a numb butt in front of a computer. I did it for decades as an employee, and that’s NOT how I plan to spend the next 20 years of my life on planet Earth.
I do what I want, when I want, with whom I like, where I want, for the reasons I want, as long as I do so with love and integrity.
The Reality of Making Money Online
To be wildly successful with online content creation takes consistency, imagination, luck, and time—lots of it.
My problem is that life gets in the way. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking a four-hour workweek will do it. You can’t outsource your creativity to a low-wage virtual assistant or rely solely on AI. Acquiring high subscription numbers takes serious effort.
The difference between prolific content creators like Tim Denning or Ayodeji Awosika and me? They’re strategic and put in the right mix of effort. I don’t. I choose to lollygag on my sailboat, cycle in the park with a buddy, reclaim old furniture, and invest countless fleeting moments waiting for Allah knows what.
Peace Over Profit: My Creative Path
Paying my bills will likely never come from my inspirational videos, stories, and images—and I’m okay with that. At best, I’ll recover some business-tinkering costs to fund hobbies. Then I’ll give the rest away and help folks poorer than me in Bangladesh, where I plan to be a blissful expat living off my soon-to-purchase farmland.
You see, my online friend, I have little reason to feel any lack of discipline or focus at this stage in life. I’ve been working on my videos, writings, and images since I retired 11 years earlier than expected in 2014, and I’m okay making ‘zilch’ off them.
Not yearning for that shiny object or achievement peering around the corner is liberating.
Artistic Expression Driven by Divine Fate, Not Wealth
Ultimately, I’ll conclude that my creative pursuits and artistic expression are driven by personal fulfillment and a belief in divine fate rather than a pursuit of wealth or fame.
Divine fate is when we don’t force results because we believe a higher power predetermines decisions. Only Allah knows my fate. Destiny is the event (or direction of the event) that will necessarily occur in the future. There is nothing inevitable, but Allah has power over everything.
Allah is the master of fate.
I bet you didn’t expect this story to take a spiritual turn, did you? There you have it…
I create for creativity’s sake because it is my destiny. I do it because creativity brings me joy.

Invitations to Try: 10 Ways to Find Freedom Over Money
A Poetic Reflection: The Choice
Will you chase the gold that gleams, Or sail upon your creative dreams?
That both can live in harmony, If only you’d pay their fee gladly.
To seek fulfillment’s quiet light, Or count the coins both day and night.
But do you need their knowing guide, When peace resides right by your side?
In tales untold, in songs unsung, In words that dance on every tongue.
To chase the joy of simply being, Beyond the realms of riches seeing.
Remember that what makes you whole, Is the gentle weaving of your soul.
For wealth may come, as seasons do, But joy in art remains in you.
For whether wealth or dreams unfurl, Creative freedom reigns, a pearl.
And in the art of simply living, Find the peace that keeps on giving.
Are You Exactly Where You’re Supposed to Be?
What about you? Will you choose a more modest path of creative freedom, or are you chasing the almighty dollar? Either path is acceptable. After all, it’s your journey, and who am I to tell you how to live your life?
Like so many, I aim to discover a unique creative path regardless of financial rewards.
Furthermore, nothing is missing in my life that an online program can provide. I don’t need or want to feel lulled into purchasing yet another how-to program.
My economy is alive and well.
