What is Creative Mindfulness? A Meditation Practice for Problem-Solving and Joy

Hello, wonderful community!

Today, I want to share a transformative journey I’ve embarked on—a meditation practice that blends mindfulness and creativity to unlock profound insights and bring more joy into daily life.

Creative Mindfulness is more than traditional meditation or simply being present; it encompasses a deeper understanding of the mind. It’s a purposeful meditation practice where you set an intention during your session, allowing innovative solutions to gently surface from your subconscious mind. Imagine combining the calm of mindfulness meditation with the spark of creative thinking, creating a pathway for answers and moments of clarity to illuminate your way forward.

Creative Mindfulness is a meditation technique that helps you gain creative insights into problems you wish to solve. It involves being mindful—fully present in the moment—while intentionally seeking innovative solutions to specific issues you meditate on.

Traditional mindfulness meditation focuses on being present without seeking solutions. However, Creative Mindfulness introduces an intention to gain insight, blending conscious awareness with creative thinking. By practicing this technique, you allow your subconscious mind to generate innovative solutions for your conscious mind.

How to Practice Creative Mindfulness Meditation

When practicing Creative Mindfulness, set a clear intention to address a specific problem before you begin your meditation session. During meditation, insights may surface subtly, helping you find answers. This mindfulness approach doesn’t guarantee instant clarity but can lead to meaningful breakthroughs over time.

For instance, when facing personal dilemmas, I set intentions before meditating, seeking answers from within and beyond myself. This meditation practice helped me gain clarity in relationships and other important life decisions.

Creative Mindfulness is about tapping into your subconscious wisdom and, potentially, a higher power to solve life’s challenges. It encourages happiness and the belief that answers will come when you ask for them with intention.

The power of Creative Mindfulness gives me hope. It is a process of asking for help, seeking answers, and believing that insight will come.

Understanding the Foundations of Creative Mindfulness

Before diving deeper into this meditation practice, let’s explore five essential concepts that build our foundation for understanding Creative Mindfulness:

1. Meditation
2. Mindfulness
3. Creativity
4. Conscious and Subconscious Mind
5. Past, Present, Future

What is Meditation?

To meditate is to engage in mental exercise (such as concentration on one’s breathing or repetition of a mantra) to reach a heightened level of spiritual awareness.

Defining Mindfulness

Mindfulness is “the simple process of noticing new things about the familiar. When we notice actively, we become sensitive to perspective and change.” — [Ellen Langer, Harvard professor of psychology](https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2019/07/focal-point-harvard-professor-ellen-langer-wants-everyone-to-question-their-assumptions/)

Understanding Creativity in Meditation

Creativity is the ability to make or otherwise bring something original into existence—a unique solution to a problem, a new method, an artistic object or form. — [Britannica](https://www.britannica.com/topic/creativity)

Conscious and Subconscious Mind in Meditation

Consciousness: Everything you understand and are aware of.

Unconscious/Subconscious: Everything outside your immediate awareness. The variety of activities your subconscious mind performs is humbling and impressive. **Think of it this way:** You are conscious of external objects, states, or facts. But are you also aware of your mental activities just below the threshold of consciousness?

For our purpose here, let’s focus on how conscious perceptions and subconscious insights work together during Creative Mindfulness meditation.

But first, let’s explore five simple definitions to build our foundation for understanding what I mean by “Creative Mindfulness.” Forgive me if I insult your intelligence with these introductory psychology 101 terms. I’ll be quick!

  1. Meditation,
  2. Mindfulness,
  3. Creativity,
  4. Conscious — Subconscious,
  5. Past, Present, Future.

To meditate is to engage in mental exercise (such as concentration on one’s breathing or repetition of a mantra) to reach a heightened level of spiritual awareness.

I’ll assume you’re familiar with the concept of Mindfulness. So — now, let’s toss in Creativity: The ability to make or otherwise bring something original into existence, a unique solution to a problem, a new method, an artistic object or form. — Britannica

Consciousness: Everything you understand,

Unconscious; Everything outside your awareness. The variety of activities your unconscious mind performs for you is humbling and impressive. Think of it this way: You are conscious of external objects, states, or facts. But are you also subconscious of your mental activities just below the threshold of consciousness? Many mental researchers still see the unconscious mind as the shadow of a “real” mindful mind. For our purpose here, let’s focus our discussions on conscious perceptions and save subconscious exploration for your therapist (of which I am not).

Past, Present, and Future: You travel back and forth in your mind along a timeline continuum. The theory says you can only be in one position along the continuum at a time. For example, my brother lives in the past and dreams of the future. It’s difficult for him to be mindful and present while dreaming about tomorrow.

Conversely, I live in the present, rarely visit the past, and never stop obsessing over plans. For me, being mindful is a shift in consciousness from the future to the present moment—not always easy to achieve.

And you? Where are you on your timeline, and what is your default position? For instance, do you tend to live in the past and often worry about the future? I’m not suggesting you shouldn’t reminisce over fond childhood memories or that you can’t dream about the future.

Practicing any form of Mindfulness requires a conscious effort to be fully present in the current moment.

Now that you have these concepts fresh in your head, let’s keep going…

Traditional Mindfulness.

Mindfulness practiced traditionally, on its own, is to be fully present in the here and now with no agenda — the absence of seeking solutions.

While correct, this narrow perspective is a desire to calm down, destress or live joyfully in the moment. — and there’s nothing wrong with that. (there’s a but coming)

In the early days of my mindfulness practice, I focused on ’emptying my mind’ — shutting it down through breathing exercises, reciting a mantra, yoga or some other method.

Back then, I strived to relax and calm my overactive mind. Experts (whoever they are) say that a mindfulness practice should not be agenda-bound for any desired outcome. To do so would fail to ‘empty the mind‘ and contradict what traditional Mindfulness is. — they are correct!

However, later in life, I discovered that apparent answers would come to me whenever I introduced an intention into my meditation (stating a problem and hoping for a solution).

Time Awareness: Past, Present, and Future

You travel back and forth in your mind along a timeline continuum. Mindfulness theory says you can only be in one position along the continuum at a time.

For example, my brother lives in the past and dreams of the future. It’s difficult for him to practice mindfulness and be present while dreaming about tomorrow.

Conversely, I live in the present, rarely visit the past, and constantly plan ahead. For me, being mindful requires a conscious shift from the future to the present moment—not always easy to achieve.

And you? Where are you on your timeline, and what is your default position? Do you tend to live in the past and worry about the future?

Practicing any form of mindfulness meditation requires a conscious effort to be fully present in the current moment.

Now that you have these concepts fresh in your mind, let’s continue exploring Creative Mindfulness…

Traditional Mindfulness Meditation vs. Creative Mindfulness

Traditional mindfulness meditation is practiced by being fully present in the here and now with no agenda—the absence of seeking solutions.

This approach is correct for those who want to calm down, destress, or live joyfully in the moment—and there’s nothing wrong with that traditional meditation practice.

In the early days of my mindfulness journey, I focused on ‘emptying my mind’ —shutting it down through breathing exercises, reciting a mantra, yoga, or other meditation techniques.

Back then, I strived to relax and calm my overactive mind. Meditation experts say that a traditional mindfulness practice should not be agenda-bound for any desired outcome. To do so would fail to ‘*empty the mind*’ and contradict what traditional mindfulness is—and they are correct!

However, later in life, I discovered that **answers would come to me whenever I introduced an intention into my meditation practice** (stating a problem and hoping for a solution).

This discovery led me to develop what I now call Creative Mindfulness meditation. – Daniel~Ibrahim

A Poem by Daniel~Ibrahim

In whispers soft, where silence dwells,
A dance unfolds, a story tells,
Of Mindfulness, where moments gleam,
And Creativity, where visions dream.

In the stillness of a conscious breath,
Insight emerges from the depths.
With gentle focus, hearts align,
In present space, where spirits shine.

Mindful gazes, soft and clear,
Bring the distant future near.
They suspend the haste of fleeting time,
Awakening truths, both bold and prime.

With Creativity, in playful guise,
Ideas like stars in vast skies rise.
They light the paths once cloaked in night,
Turning shadows into radiant light.

Set intentions like seeds to ground,
In meditation’s embrace, they’re found.
Within the quiet, answers spring,
A simple thought, a whispering.

Each session, a canvas white and bare,
Painted with hopes, hung in the air.
Insights drift like autumn leaves,
Landing soft, where the heart believes.

Gather these treasures, tenderly hold,
Stories of wisdom, quietly told.
They chart the course, they guide the way,
Infusing joy in each new day.

In moments shared, communities high,
Together we reach, together we fly.
Exploring realms of mind and soul,
In unity, we become whole.

So journey forth with an open heart,
Let the joy of insight play its part.
In Creative Mindfulness, find your song,
Where peace and purpose both belong.

Let whispers turn to melodies,
In life’s grand, evolving symphonies.
With joy inspired, let insight flow,
In every breath, let wonder grow.

How to Start Your Creative Mindfulness Meditation Practice

Next time you practice mindfulness meditation (being fully present), try adding a new element to your practice: Set an intention for your meditation session.

Traditional meditation says you’re not supposed to infuse an agenda into your practice, but Creative Mindfulness has a specific purpose— to gain creative insight and innovative solutions.

The goal is that, through your stated intention before meditating, you’ll foster creative insight into one specific problem you face that day or get answers to a lingering concern that’s been bothering you.

When you are fully present and aware of your immediate thoughts and feelings during meditation, you set the stage for practicing Creative Mindfulness.

The key principle is that your brain will tap into the subconscious mind —mental activities just below the threshold of your consciousness—and trickle a creative solution into your conscious mind.

I know what you’re thinking… how can I consciously tap into my subconscious during meditation?

Please stick with me and refrain from overanalyzing the concept.

Don’t expect on-demand epiphanies from your mindfulness practice. Sometimes insights are apparent; most times, they’re faint. So, be mindful of patterns of insight that emerge —those intuitive inklings that repeatedly trickle to the surface when meditating.

Psychology or Spirituality in Meditation?

Are you confused about whether I’m talking about using meditation to tap into the subconscious mind or about a higher power answering your questions through prayer and insight? I don’t know, and it doesn’t matter—run with what you believe. I think it’s a combination of the two approaches to mindfulness.

Real-Life Creative Mindfulness Examples: Finding Answers Through Meditation

Example 1: Finding Love Through Creative Mindfulness

Back in 2021, before I sat for my daily meditation, I set an intention and asked a higher power (Allah and the power within me) to grant me the following:

“There are eight billion people out there. So please send me the answer to find that one extraordinary, pure love partner with whom I can share the rest of my life.”

I am a spiritual being having human experiences. I was looking for that loving life partner—you know, the kind of relationship where you’d say, ‘take my kidney…you are the centre of my universe, and I am your oxygen’—a complex relationship for a man of my age and orientation to find.

I turned to my Creative Mindfulness meditation practice in search of answers buried deep in my subconscious and soul.

I wanted to know if I was on the proper relationship path with someone I was dating and had fallen in love with.

Toward the end of my meditation session, the answer suddenly glared at me: “YES, this person is the one!”

I am a verbal-visual processor. As I sat cross-legged on my bed during mindfulness meditation, I had a clear visualization in my mind and muttered to myself, “YES, this person is the one!”

It was the most remarkable experience; I went into my mindful meditation seeking an intention, and by the end of my practice, the insight came to me with such clarity. I had been ambivalent about my relationship dilemma for months, and now the answer seemed obvious through Creative Mindfulness.

Let me be clear: I don’t have these kinds of insights every day from my meditation practice, so when they happen, they’re noticeable. I’ve become more attuned to their subtleties, looking for and expecting them to surface during mindfulness sessions.

A more poetic way to describe Creative Mindfulness is that angels always send me messages, partly because I keep asking through meditation and partly because I keep looking and noticing more. I may be creating an alternate reality for myself through this mindfulness practice, and that’s okay, too.

Example 2: Making Difficult Decisions with Creative Mindfulness

I recently asked the powers in my subconscious (accumulated knowledge and wisdom over a lifetime) and a divine force (whatever you believe in—I believe in Allah) to answer my dilemma during meditation: “Do I sell my sailboat or keep it another year?”

I needed a reasonable, creative solution and decision to address the uncertainty of how to pay for (and justify) my sailboat’s costly annual maintenance fees. This issue had plagued me for years, as I struggled to justify the related expenses. Furthermore, due to the frigid Canadian winter, I could only experience her for six months of the year. As a result, I was conflicted and ambivalent about selling my beloved vessel; she brought me such joy.

Creative Mindfulness meditation helped me find the answer.

It’s been said that “Allah (God) is in you and works through you.” This means a divine power (or whatever you believe in) will answer life’s problems if you ask the right question during mindfulness practice. Of course, you may not like the answer, but that’s a topic for another time.

As I explained earlier, it’s possible to enter a state of divinity during Creative Mindfulness meditation. I have experienced this many times.

[Divinity](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divinity) as a quality has two distinct usages:

  • Divine force or power — Powers or forces that are universal or transcend human capacities
  • Divinity applied to mortals — Qualities of individuals considered to have unique access or relationship to the divine

In other words, the answer you seek through Creative Mindfulness is already within you and needs to be revealed through meditation. The power of Creative Mindfulness offers hope—a process of asking for help, seeking answers, and believing that, ultimately, they will come.
