Why My Ego Was Fed the Biggest Piece of Life’s Humble Pie: A Creative’s Journey to Authentic Success

How Embracing Humility Transformed My Creative Journey and Storytelling

Hey, Fellow Creatives!

I recently had one of those life-changing “aha” moments, and I need to share it with you. Picture this: Your ego is like a giant balloon—shiny, full of hot air, making you feel invincible. We all have those days, right? But then life serves you a massive slice of humble pie, and suddenly—pssst—that balloon deflates faster than your motivation on a Monday morning.

Yep, I devoured a big ol’ slice of that pie, and honestly? It was the best thing that ever happened to my creative career. It taught me that striving to be the best at everything is exhausting and counterproductive. Instead, embracing humility opened my eyes to fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and authentic storytelling techniques that actually resonate with audiences.

This transformative experience revolutionized my approach to storytelling, content creation, and writing. I discovered that releasing that inflated ego creates space for genuine imagination and authenticity—the secret ingredients every successful creative needs. And here’s the kicker: Stories born from humility connect deeper and perform better.

So here’s to all the humble pie moments out there—may we all experience them regularly to stay grounded, creative, and inspired!

What about you? Have you tasted humble pie that changed your creative perspective?  — Daniel~Ibrahim

Are You a Creative Person Whose Work Rarely Gets Noticed? Here’s Why That’s Actually Okay

Stuck in a puddle of envy, wondering why you’re not more popular?

Ask yourself what you’re doing wrong and why people don’t engage with your content.

Consider this game-changing possibility: You’re exactly where you should be in your creative journey. Perhaps you need to shift focus toward achieving measurable results rather than chasing vanity metrics.

Crafting masterpieces worthy of recognition is an art form requiring dedicated energy and time. Embrace the beautiful messiness of your trials and errors.

The Creative Growth Formula: Put your work out there, test wild ideas, maintain laser focus, appreciate constructive feedback, and repeat until you’re satisfied. I’ve been writing blog posts for over a decade and, as of 2025, am still working toward adequate content monetization. But I’m not giving up—and neither should you!

Here’s the truth bomb: You’ll never be completely satisfied, so you’ll keep creating. And something magical happens over time. You’ll gain competence and results as people discover your creations.

You’ll look back at your initial attempts (let’s call them “learning experiences”), compare them to your current work, and beam with pride at the improvement. I certainly did!  –Daniel~Ibrahim

Creative improvement sneaks up on you like an unexpected bee in your beer can on a sunny patio afternoon.

My high school teachers cringed at my essays. I nearly got fired for poorly written emails. Yet two decades later, I wrote multi-million dollar proposals through my day job and won competitive bids with my team. Now, can I replicate that success as a freelance creative? I believe so.

Today, I find writing stories and producing unique perspectives genuinely enjoyable—to the point where reviewing my best work gives me immense satisfaction. (Relax, it’s a figure of speech!)

“If English isn’t your first language and my slang confuses you, just know that getting a ‘woody’ is a colloquial Canadian term for feeling excited or proud about something.”

“So chill. I’m just passionate about creative work—but I digress.”

A Quick Story About Learning Humility the Hard Way

Years ago, I decided to learn piano. At my first lesson, I confidently thumped a six-inch songbook into my teacher’s hands and declared: I want to play Billy Joel’s Piano Man by New Year’s.

His reply? “Of what decade? Let’s start with ‘Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star‘ and basic chords, then pick a more realistic piece.”

A month later, halfway through my fourth lesson—after I’d failed to practice—he reached into his pocket, handed back my money, and said:

“I quit as your teacher. You just don’t get it. Learning and creativity are processes that must be respected. Your ego cares more about likes and attention than putting in hard work. I prefer teaching humble children who practice diligently and follow instructions. You’re fired!”

I walked out with my tail between my legs. Months earlier, I’d bought a $5,000 piano on credit, only to sell it for a measly $900 to my dental hygienist—a lovely Filipino lady whose seven-year-old son had mastered his chords and was performing in a New Year’s Eve recital. That little guy understood what I didn’t.

That experience served me one of the most significant slices of humble berry pie I’ve ever been force-fed.

How I’ve Grown Since My 30s: Lessons for Every Creative

Pulling creative rabbits out of thin air to please audiences is challenging work requiring substantial time and effort. Convincing someone to pay for your creative work? Even harder.

Part of the problem: We live in an era of instant gratification and easy accolades, with minimal genuine creativity required.

I could post irrelevant pictures of my morning coffee on social media and get at least eight likes. (Try it yourself and see!)

Today’s likes and claps are as easy to collect as… well, they’re everywhere.

More valuable success metrics include:

  • Viewers subscribing to your content
  • Regular return visitors consuming multiple pieces
  • Thoughtful, insightful comments (not just emojis)
  • Private messages that aren’t spam
  • People are actually paying for your offerings

When someone pays for your creative work, my friend, life in the content creation world doesn’t get better than that.

Let’s recap the key lessons: Stop comparing yourself to others, forget chasing superficial engagement metrics, and be authentically yourself!

Class dismissed…

The Invitation: What If the Unknown Is Calling You?

What if there's something you've always wanted to do, but fear held you back?

What if the unknown is calling you, too?

Think about it—the things that scare you the most are often worth pursuing.

Maybe your "boat" isn't a sailboat. Maybe it's the creative project you've been postponing, the business idea that terrifies you, the life change everyone says is "too risky."

But here's what I've learned: The risk isn't in saying yes to the thing that scares you. The risk is in saying no and spending the rest of your life wondering "what if?"

Let's live, love, learn, create,

Creative Path Action Strategies: What I Learned When Ego Met Life's Humble Pie

THE BIG PICTURE –10 Strategies for Creative Success

Focus on Consistent Effort and Persistence

Embrace the messiness of creative trials and errors. Keep publishing your work, testing innovative ideas, and maintaining focus. Value constructive feedback and repeat the creative process continuously.

Improve Your Creative Skills Over Time

Dedicate consistent time and effort to transform your work into masterpieces worthy of recognition. Acknowledge that improvement arrives gradually through persistent practice.

Seek and Value Constructive Feedback

Actively pursue feedback from trusted sources and use it for continuous improvement. Learn distinguishing superficial engagement (likes and claps) from meaningful interaction (thoughtful comments and direct messages).

Develop Content Monetization Strategies

Continuously explore methods to monetize your creative content adequately. Keep refining your approach until achieving desired financial success.

Adjust Expectations and Cultivate Humility

Manage ego and expectations by understanding your creative journey’s natural progression. Learn from past failures and recognize the transformative value of hard work and humility.

Avoid the Instant Gratification Trap

Focus on building long-term creative success rather than seeking immediate accolades. Aim for deeper audience engagement over superficial metrics.

Build Genuine Audience Engagement

Create authentic interactions where viewers subscribe, return regularly, and engage meaningfully with your content. Prioritize building a loyal community that genuinely values your creative work.

Practice Self-Reflection and Personal Growth

Regularly reflect on personal and professional growth opportunities. Use past experiences (like my piano story) to guide future creative endeavours.

Be Authentically Yourself

Focus on developing your unique voice rather than comparing yourself to other creators. Cultivate your distinctive creative style and perspective.

Regularly Reassess Your Creative Priorities

Periodically reevaluate your creative projects and focus energy on those with the greatest potential for success and personal fulfillment.

In the realm where my ego soared high,

A balloon of dreams in a vast, open sky,
But life, with its wisdom, gently came by,
And offered a slice of its humble pie.

The taste was bittersweet, unexpected, profound,
A grounding force that brought me to the ground.
In that moment, my vision was clear,
The stories within me began to appear.

I once sought applause, the brightest acclaim,
Chased after likes, the ephemeral fame,
Yet in humility, I found my own name,
A creative spark, a new kind of game.

The ego, deflated, made room for the muse,
In stories and words, I started to lose
The self-imposed pressure, the mind’s endless ruse,
The freedom to create, I could finally choose.

A piano unplayed, a lesson unheeded,
Once seemed like failure, a path unneeded.
Yet in this restraint, something new seeded:
The strength in humility, creativity succeeded.

Now I write, not for the crowd’s fawning praise,
But for the joy of the words, the endless maze
Of stories untold, of imaginative ways,
Where authenticity shines, and ego decays.

So here’s to the pie, humble and sweet,
That nourishes the soul, makes creation complete.
In its silent wisdom, I found my beat,
And stories that resonate, humble and fleet.

To those on the journey, in need of reply,
May you savor a slice of life’s humble pie,
For within it lies a truth you can’t buy:
That the heart’s gentle whisper is where stories lie.
