Experience Bangladesh Like a Local: The Ultimate Rickshaw Travel Guide

by | Bangladesh-Stories, Videos

Before visiting Kuakata Beach, I didn’t know places like this existed.

A beach where geography and coastline alignment create the rare phenomenon of watching both sunrise and sunset over the ocean from the same stretch of sand. But that’s exactly what Ibrahim and I discovered on Bangladesh’s Bay of Bengal coast—18 kilometres of pristine shoreline, sacred pilgrimage traditions, and the kind of raw beauty that reminds you why authentic travel matters. This isn’t Cox’s Bazar with its crowds and tourist infrastructure. This is Kuakata—Bangladesh’s second-largest coastal destination that somehow remains a hidden gem.

In this immersive travel video, Ibrahim and I experienced the authentic heart of Bangladesh through cycle rickshaw rides across bustling cities and serene countryside. Discover what it’s really like to travel Bangladesh’s stunning landscapes the way locals do—on a traditional rickshaw.

What It’s Really Like to Ride a Cycle Rickshaw in Bangladesh

Cycle rickshaws are human-powered vehicles propelled by pedalling. Watching these thin, weathered, stress-faced drivers pedalling Ibrahim and me as we weaved through a cacophony of fast-moving obstacles on rough roads—sometimes against traffic—was both exhilarating and humbling.

I felt conflicted experiencing Bangladesh travel through the manual labour of rickshaw drivers (riksha-wala) who have few other options for survival. Yet I was also mindful that I was providing income to someone with a family to feed.

At times, I had to pinch myself in amazement that I had finally built up the courage to leave the comfort of Toronto, Canada, and immerse myself in authentic Bangladeshi culture.

The Reality of Rickshaw Drivers in Bangladesh

These hardworking men toil under extreme rain, heat, and wind. Many look 20 years older than their actual age, seem malnourished, and are visibly stressed. I wouldn’t last a day doing that kind of harsh manual labour.

Alhamdulillah for my privileged lifestyle. Ibrahim and I always made sure we tipped well. I doubt most of my friends and family fully grasp how blessed they are to live in such an abundant, developed country like Canada.

Bangladesh: The Rickshaw Capital of the World

According to Wikipedia, cycle rickshaws (রিকশা riksha) are the most popular mode of transport in Bangladesh. Dhaka, the capital city, is known as the “Rickshaw Capital of the World.”

Key facts about Bangladesh rickshaws:

  • Introduced in 1938
  • 300,000+ cycle rickshaws in Dhaka by the end of the 20th century
  • Approximately 400,000 cycle rickshaws run daily across Bangladesh
  • More convenient than auto rickshaws, cabs, and buses in many areas
  • The only vehicles that can navigate narrow streets and lanes in many neighborhoods
  • Primarily convertible with decorated folding hoods

However, increasing traffic congestion has led to rickshaw bans on many major roads. Urban employment in Bangladesh largely depends on cycle rickshaws, with rural villagers moving to cities to become rickshaw drivers due to inflation and unemployment.

“It is HE who made the earth manageable for you, so travel its regions, and eat of HIS provisions. To HIM is the Resurgence.” — Quran 67:15

About Our Travel Videos

We capture these “Interesting Experiences” using an iPhone or drone throughout our travels. Ibrahim is skilled at compiling clips, adding music, and using special effects to create short pieces for social media sharing. I prefer Final Cut Pro, but often post raw cuts to share these spontaneous moments.

Be inspired by the remarkable diversity Allah has created for us on planet Earth. Inshallah, you will capture and share your own stories.

The Creative Objective

To document the effort, not just the ride. The objective of this production was to capture the raw effort of the drivers, the organized chaos of the streets, and the human element of transportation. We are here to tell the story of the drivers so effectively that it inspires others to see the value in this human-powered infrastructure.

The Story & The Scene

The Story: The human-powered transportation system that employs hundreds of thousands of people in Bangladesh.
The Scene: Dhaka, the “Rickshaw Capital of the World.” We focused on the pedaling, the sweat, the narrow streets, the 300,000+ rickshaws in Dhaka alone, and the thin, weathered, stress-faced drivers.

The Director’s Vision

When you shoot a project, don’t just shoot the ride. Shoot the effort. Show the driver, the struggle, the resilience. That’s where the value lies. This isn’t just travel footage; it’s labor data. By documenting the physical effort and the economic reality, we are creating a digital archive of a transportation system that is increasingly rare in the modern world.
“Presence Over Perfection. If you wait for the perfect lighting setup, you miss the story. If you wait for the perfect script, you miss the emotion. The ‘perfect’ shot was the one where the driver’s face showed the strain, or where we navigated through the narrowest alley. That’s the shot that sells the story.”

The Production Pipeline

Pre-Production: No scripts. No direction for the drivers. The goal was to capture the “effort,” not just the ride. We arrived with curiosity, an iPhone, and a drone.
Production: Captured raw moments weaving through the cacophony of fast-moving obstacles on rough roads, sometimes against traffic. We used an iPhone and a drone to capture the pedaling, the sweat, and the narrow streets. We didn’t wait for “perfect light.” We just showed up and recorded the humbling reality as it happened.
Post-Production: Minimal editing to preserve the raw emotion and natural sound. The footage feels real. It feels humbling. Ibrahim compiled clips, added music, and created short pieces for social media sharing.
Note: This workflow applies to all video formats, whether hosted on self-hosted WordPress, Vimeo, or other platforms. The focus is on the authentic human element, not the technical specs.

The Video Description

This module captures the raw effort of cycle rickshaw drivers in Dhaka, the “Rickshaw Capital of the World.” Moving beyond simple travel footage, we document the human-powered transportation system that employs hundreds of thousands of people, focusing on the pedaling, the sweat, and the organized chaos of the streets.

Shot with an iPhone and a drone, this footage proves that the most powerful stories are found in the struggle and resilience of the drivers. By focusing on the effort rather than just the ride, we create a piece of labor data that highlights the cultural significance and economic reality of this increasingly rare transportation system. This is a testament to the “Presence Over Perfection” philosophy—capturing the humbling reality as it happens, not as we stage it.
