Discovering Bangladesh by Motorcycle: An Immersive Travel Experience

Tapping into your creative genius is a journey worth taking. With effort, patience, and practice, the rewards are great. Don’t be afraid to take the leap, take risks, and embrace your imperfections.

Creativity is not just about producing something extraordinary; it’s more about the process, the journey, and the growth that comes with it.

In this video, Ibrahim and I experienced wild motorcycle rides throughout Bangladesh’s stunning landscapes. From bustling cities to serene countryside, this short video captures the beauty of motorcycle travel in an exotic land.

Overcoming Fear: Learning to Ride Motorcycles in Bangladesh

It took me a little practice and patience to overcome my fear of winding down a dirt road, hanging on for what seemed like dear life.

What an immersive way to ignite your passion for travel!

Imagine this…

You grope the driver from behind with your crotch and wrap your arms around his tiny waist, then the person behind you does the same thing. Transporting a live goat, luggage, and market supplies on a tuk-tuk or motorcycle takes practice.

Keep your mouth closed, or you’ll swallow flying things. Eventually, I mastered balancing and taking video selfies of our rides.

It’s challenging to fit three big guys or a family of three or more on one bike. Women sit sideways with kids on their laps. Often, their Burkas are dangling in the wind and inches away from getting caught in the rear tire and ripping their scalps off (it’s happened).

Ibrahim and I travelled to remote areas by motorcycle and captured many exotic images.

Travel Tips: Negotiating Motorcycle Fares in Bangladesh

Being a Bangladeshi native, Ibrahim had a creative way to get the cheapest fare.

As we approached the cluster of drivers mulling about the roadside, I would step back and tuck into a shop out of sight. Ibrahim would bargain in Bangala, and once he got the best price, he’d signal me to dash on board. It worked like a charm, most times.

By default, as a pasty white tourist, anything I’d buy on my own was way more expensive than what locals pay. I don’t blame them; they know I can afford a premium. And honestly, they deserve the extra cash.

Nevertheless, technically speaking, Ibrahim is the paying native customer, and any money saved goes directly to helping his family and friends with groceries and other goodies.

Whatever mode of transportation you choose, it helps to have a local guide with you to negotiate a fair local price (for everything). I am terrible at haggling, but Ibrahim is a pro at negotiating.

In Canada, we don’t negotiate taxis, groceries or retail. — It’s just not commonly done in our culture, and besides, I suck at it!

Even if I overpay for my ride by Bangladeshi standards, as a tourist, I still get a great deal compared to more expensive North American fares. However, don’t be a weenie and haggle over $1.00—pay the buck and give the guy a great tip.

Once, Ibrahim was bargaining with a farmer for a plump goose. He did well until I decided to film the negotiation on my iPhone. Suddenly, the price doubled for the bird. Unfortunately, the locals in his village were onto us, and mysteriously, shopping got more expensive unless he shopped solo as I blended into the adjacent background (yeah, right).

Alhamdulillah for my privileged lifestyle. Ibrahim and I always made sure we tipped well. I doubt most of my friends and family fully grasp how blessed they are to live in such an abundant, developed country like Canada!

Practical Advice: Hiring a Motorcycle and Driver in Bangladesh

It’s a funky feeling when your butt cheeks and crotch go numb and tingle a thousand needles after a long trip. If I had to earn a living transporting people, I’d pick a motorcycle but stay off the main streets of Dhaka.

My 30-day experiment with creative freedom through travel changed everything.

Hiring a 150 cc motorcycle and driver is an exciting way to get around Bangladesh – They’re everywhere.

Perhaps next time, I’ll hire a local expert to teach me how to get around safely. Living in Toronto, Canada, I was always afraid to ride a motorcycle. I think it’s time to expand my comfort zone and learn to drive safely as a tourist in an exotic land.

This happens when you get full of creative freedom; you build the courage to learn a new skill and try something outside of your comfort zone.

Imagine going on a super exciting bike ride that you would never forget. In Bangladesh, a country far away, people have memorable motorcycle adventures. They ride through beautiful places with green fields, big rivers, and small villages. These rides are unforgettable because they are so much fun, and the places they see are pretty, just like in a storybook.

In Bangladesh, where the rivers gently flow,

And emerald rice fields in the sun glow,
Motorbike dreams begin their lively dance,
Through quaint villages, they swiftly advance.

A whispered breeze guides the daring path,
Past golden temples of ancient craft,
Each turn reveals an untold tale,
In a land where vibrant colours never pale.

The rhythmic beat of the tire's hum,
Harmonizes with the village drum,
As friendly smiles greet the riders' eye,
In this slice of heaven underneath the endless sky.

Along the Padma, its waters wide,
Reflections ripple with the joyful ride,
The bridge stretched like a guardian’s arm,
Keeping safe the travellers from harm.

Sunsets paint the horizon in hues bold,
As shadows lengthen, the day grows old,
But the soul, alight with stories and dreams,
Holds fast to these scenes, like rushing streams.

Unforgettable journeys, under moonlit night,
The laughter of stars, a guiding light,
In Bangladesh, on motorcycles, they roam,
Finding in freedom, a road to home.

The Creative Objective

To document the journey, not just the ride. The objective of this production was to capture the raw thrill of riding through villages, the organized chaos of Dhaka, and the freedom of exploring on two wheels. We aimed to tell the story of the mobility so effectively that it inspires others to see the value in this transportation infrastructure.

The Story & The Scene

The Story: The two-wheel transportation system that moves millions of people daily in Bangladesh.
The Scene: Motorcycles dominating the roads, the rice fields glowing in the sun, the bridge stretching like a guardian’s arm, the organized chaos of Dhaka, and the rural landscapes. We focused on the raw thrill of the ride, the drivers, and the landscapes.

The Director’s Vision

When you shoot a project, don’t just shoot the vehicle. Shoot the journey. Show the roads, the drivers, the landscapes. That’s where the value lies. This isn’t just travel footage; it’s mobility data. By story-telling the transportation system and the rural landscapes, we are creating a digital archive of a region that operates on two wheels.
“Presence Over Perfection. If you wait for the perfect lighting setup, you miss the story. If you wait for the perfect script, you miss the emotion. The ‘perfect’ shot was the one where the rice fields glowed in the sun, or where the bridge stretched like a guardian’s arm. That’s the shot that sells the story.”

The Production Pipeline

Pre-Production: No scripts. No direction for the drivers. The goal was to capture the “journey,” not just the ride. We arrived with curiosity, an iPhone, and a drone.
Production: Captured raw moments riding through Bangladesh. We used an iPhone and a drone to capture the rice fields, the bridges, and the organized chaos of Dhaka. We didn’t wait for “perfect light.” We just showed up and recorded the adventure as it happened.
Post-Production: Minimal editing to preserve the raw thrill and natural sound. The footage feels real. It feels adventurous. We compiled raw clips, added inspirational Bangladeshi music, and created short pieces for social media sharing.
Note: This workflow applies to all video formats, whether hosted on self-hosted WordPress, Vimeo, or other platforms. The focus is on the authentic journey, not the technical specs.

The Video Description

This module captures the raw thrill of motorcycle travel through Bangladesh’s stunning countryside, bustling cities, and hidden villages. Moving beyond simple vehicle footage, we document the journey of riding through emerald rice fields, along the mighty Padma River, and through vibrant local communities.

Shot with an iPhone and a drone, this footage proves that the most powerful travel stories are found in the authentic moments of exploration. By focusing on the journey rather than just the ride, we create a piece of mobility data that highlights the essential two-wheel transportation system in Bangladesh. This is a testament to the “Presence Over Perfection” philosophy—capturing the adventure as it happens, not as we stage it.

The Field Exercise

When you pitch your next project, don’t just show the “ride.” Show the “journey.” Show the reality you are documenting. And don’t be afraid to put a number on your commitment to the story. That is how you turn a video into a movement.

Director’s Questions

  • What is the “journey” I am documenting?
  • How does this story support a larger goal?
  • Am I capturing the mobility, or just the vehicle?
  • What is the dollar value of the story I’m telling?
The Motorcycle isn’t just a ride. It’s a lesson in strategic storytelling. And that’s a lesson I want you to take to your next project.
