What Are Bangladesh Tuk Tuks? A Traveller’s Guide to CNG Auto Rickshaws

In Bangladesh, tuk-tuks (officially called CNG auto rickshaws) are tiny, green, three-wheeled cages with a single driver seat in the front and a wide-ish back seat with just enough room to cozy up and violate a Western tourist’s need for personal space.

One exception is if you aim to fondle your newfound friend’s thigh inappropriately — but that’s another matter (perv). I sat beside Ibrahim, so holding hands and whispering in each other’s ears was always a treat. There is nothing like hiding a relationship in plain sight – eh!

If you are lucky, there’s another two-seater facing you with just enough room to play footsie and rub knees with a hitchhiker. Not so lucky if one of them loves garlic or just finished a 14-hour shift at the fish market and sneezes in your face, then tries to hork a green alien from his throat through the 1×1-inch wire grid—on YOUR side of the windy cage. — but I digress.

Creative Director's Note: Bangladesh Stories

Dear Friend,

What you're about to experience isn't just a collection of travel videos—it's a love letter to authenticity.

We didn't arrive in Bangladesh with a production crew, elaborate lighting rigs, or a scripted shot list. We arrived with curiosity, an iPhone, and a willingness to see what most of the world overlooks.

Every frame you'll see was captured in the moment—fishermen hauling nets at golden hour, the organized chaos of tuk tuk rides through Dhaka, the weathered hands of craftsmen building wooden sampan boats the same way their grandfathers did.

We didn't stage these moments. We simply showed up, paid attention, and documented what moved us.

Ibrahim and I believe the most powerful stories live in the spaces between tourist attractions—in a $1 barber shop, on the back of a motorcycle winding through villages, in the curious faces of locals who'd never seen someone like me with a camera.

This project taught us that creativity isn't about perfection. It's about presence. It's about trading control for connection, polish for truth, and comfort for the kind of experiences that change you.

Bangladesh gave us raw, unfiltered humanity. We gave it our full attention and respect. What emerged is proof that sometimes the best production value is simply being brave enough to capture life as it unfolds.

We hope these stories inspire you to see the extraordinary in the everyday—wherever you are.

With gratitude and adventure,

Daniel~Ibrahim

The Art of Storytelling: How Bangladesh Transformed My Creative Practice

The Reality of Riding Tuk Tuks in Dhaka: What to Expect

If you have dentures, hang onto them because there’s a reason you’re locked into a welded cage with steel-reinforced wrap-around bumpers. Do you remember riding bumper cars at the amusement park when you were a punk, ramming into the smallest kid on the track?

N95 masks are highly recommended for tuk tuk rides in Bangladesh because when you get trapped in an illogical traffic jam, an apocalyptic-looking bus that seems like it rolled off a cliff will stop three feet from your face and power blow a black plume of toxic carbon dioxide directly into your face and fill the cockpit of your tuk-tuk coffin, making you want to vomit everywhere.

Remember earplugs because everyone honks at everything all the time, everywhere! The endless stream of honking monster busses whiz by your ear with little more than 6 inches of space between their meat-grinding frames and your arm.

Yeah, forget glass windows and enjoy the torrential downpour or blazing humidity. As a Westerner, don’t freak out when a tiny boy tries to sell you a road-kill sandwich at a stop in the middle of the road or an elderly woman begs you to help feed her emancipated child.

The Video Description

This module captures the raw chaos of riding CNG auto rickshaws through Dhaka, the “Rickshaw Capital of the World.” Moving beyond simple vehicle footage, we document the transportation system that moves millions of people daily, focusing on the honking, the weaving, and the survival.

Shot with an iPhone and a drone, this footage proves that the most powerful stories are found in the organized chaos of the streets. By focusing on the system rather than just the ride, we create a piece of urban data that highlights the challenges and culture of Dhaka’s transportation. This is a testament to the “Presence Over Perfection” philosophy—capturing the chaos as it happens, not as we stage it.

The Creative Objective

To document the system, not just the vehicle. The objective of this production was to capture the raw chaos of the streets, the honking, the weaving, and the survival. We are here to tell the story of the city so effectively that it inspires others to see the value in this urban infrastructure.

The Story & The Scene

The Story: The transportation system that moves millions of people daily in Dhaka, the “Rickshaw Capital of the World.”
The Scene: 400,000 cycle rickshaws running daily, CNG tuk-tuks as the lifeblood of transportation. We focused on the CNG auto rickshaws, the metal cages, the honking, and the weaving through traffic.

The Director’s Vision

When you shoot a project, don’t just shoot the vehicle. Shoot the system. Show the traffic, the drivers, the passengers. That’s where the value lies. This isn’t just travel footage; it’s urban data. By documenting the chaos and the system, we are creating a digital archive of a city that operates on its own rules.
“Presence Over Perfection. If you wait for the perfect lighting setup, you miss the story. If you wait for the perfect script, you miss the emotion. The ‘perfect’ shot was the one where the bus blew exhaust into the cockpit, or where we narrowly avoided a collision. That’s the shot that sells the story.”

The Production Pipeline

Pre-Production: No scripts. No direction for the drivers. The goal was to capture the “system,” not just the ride. We arrived with curiosity, an iPhone, and a drone.
Production: Captured raw moments weaving through the chaotic traffic of Dhaka. We used an iPhone and a drone to capture the honking, the weaving, and the survival. We didn’t wait for “perfect light.” We just showed up and recorded the chaos as it happened.
Post-Production: Minimal editing to preserve the raw chaos and natural sound. The footage feels real. It feels chaotic. We compiled raw clips, added music, and created short pieces for social media sharing.
Note: This workflow applies to all video formats, whether hosted on self-hosted WordPress, Vimeo, or other platforms. The focus is on the authentic urban system, not the technical specs.

EpicPath Production Notes

A behind-the-scenes look into the process of crafting EpicPath Stories.

The Creative Brief: The objective, story, scene, and vision
The Production Pipeline: Pre-production to post-production workflow
The Video Description: The narrative summary of the story
Field Exercises: Practical assignments to apply the lessons

It is where you see how we did it, so you can apply it to your own workflow (or not).

A story is only half the battle. The other half is the strategy that makes it seen, the system that makes it sustainable, and the blueprint that makes it repeatable.
We believe that creativity isn't about perfection; it's about presence. It is about trading control for connection, polish for truth, and comfort for the kind of experiences that change you.
This is where the narrative meets the workflow, where inspiration becomes implementation, and where your creative vision transforms into a repeatable, scalable practice.
Where Stories Meet Strategy. Where Vision Becomes Workflow.

Creative Process & Editing

I’ve created a collection of longer videos compiled in Final Cut Pro. Then, in August 2024, I embarked on a creative journey with the more extended Rickshaw clip, transforming it into the captivating 60-second Daily Joy Reel.

With a professional touch, I added the ‘IbraDan Creative’ 4-second bumper at the end and burned in captions using https://www.rev.com. The voiceover, recorded in the heart of Toronto, brings an authentic and local connection to the video.

The Field Exercise

When you pitch your next project, don’t just show the “vehicle.” Show the “system.” Show the reality you are documenting. And don’t be afraid to put a number on your commitment to the story. That is how you turn a video into a movement.

Director’s Questions

  • What is the “system” I am documenting?
  • How does this story support a larger goal?
  • Am I capturing the chaos, or just the vehicle?
  • What is the value of the story I’m telling?
The Tuk-Tuk isn’t just a ride. It’s a lesson in strategic storytelling. And that’s a lesson I want you to take to your next project.
